FAQs

What Is Vegan Food?

Vegan food is made without any animal products and by-products. Prominent animal products include things such as meat, eggs and dairy. Less obvious animal products contain ingredients like honey and gelatine. Vegan food usually relies heavily on whole grains and legumes, a lot of fruits and vegetables, and nuts and seeds.

Our raw desserts contain a lot of nuts, seeds and fruits. At the same time, our pizzas feature lots of nuts, whole grains and vegetables.

What Is the Difference Between Vegetarian and Vegan?

Vegetarian food is made without animal products such as meat and seafood but allows for dairy products, eggs and honey. Vegetarian & plant-based lifestyles rely a lot on whole grains and legumes, fruits and vegetables, nuts, and seeds. Vegan food strictly excludes all animal products.

Plant-based Vs. Vegan. What Is the Difference?

Plant-based products are generally vegan. However, a plant-based diet is generally thought of as a ‘casual vegetarian diet’. It is focused on consuming mostly plants, with a minimal amount of animal products.

What Is the Difference Between Plant-based & Wholefoods?

Not all plant-based products are healthy or made with whole foods. Some vegan or plant-based products can be made with refined ingredients and may contain excess salt, oils or sugars, additives and preservatives. A healthy plant-based lifestyle relies on whole or minimally processed vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, legumes and wholegrains — anything and everything that is a plant or that grows on a plant. It is often synonymous with a wholefoods lifestyle or also known as a wholefoods plant-based lifestyle.

Is Your Facility Entirely Vegan?

Our production kitchen is HACCP certified and is entirely free from animal products. This means there is no risk of cross-contamination during production processes. None of our products contains traces of animal products such as milk or eggs.

Do Our Products Contain Palm Oil?

Not all vegan products are cruelty-free. Palm oil is a contributor to rainforest deforestation and impacts endangered species.

Our products do not contain palm oil. We use sustainable oils with a smaller environmental footprint, such as extra virgin olive oil and organic coconut oil.

Is Our Chocolate Ethical?

The chocolate industry is one of the most harmful industries, from the growing and harvesting of cacao beans, worker conditions to the use of milk and its global distribution chain. We source organic, fair-trade cacao butter and cacao powder, and we make our own chocolate from scratch. Our vegan chocolate is a more ethical product which protects people and cows.

Are Our Products Organic?

Our products are made with a lot of organic and pesticide-free ingredients such as almonds, cacao butter and powder, maple syrup, coconut oil, chia seeds and more. As part of our HACCP certification, we regularly audit our suppliers to ensure that ingredients maintain their certification standards. Our products are not certified organic.

Are Our Products Gluten-free?

Our desserts are entirely gluten-free.

As part of our HACCP certification, we regularly review our practices and processes and test our products in house. Our products are not certified gluten-free.

Do Our Products Contain Sugar?

Our products are made with whole fruits (fresh and dried), maple syrup, coconut blossom nectar and coconut sugar. On request, for custom cakes, we can also use rice malt syrup. Our products do not contain refined sugars or sugar alternatives such as xylitol.

How Much Notice Do You Need to Make a Cake?

We usually require at least 5 days notice to make a standard cake and at least 10 days for a Deluxe cake. We do however have Last minute cakes available on any given day so please be sure to ask.

Please bear in mind that fresh flowers might not be readily available for last minute orders.

Do I Need to Choose a Design From Your Portfolio?

If you like them, then yes please. If you have something else in mind, we would be happy to bring it to life. Just give us an idea of colour / theme / style and we will create a beautiful cake just for you. What Are Your Cake Servings?

Our cake serving sizes are based on regular coffee servings of 1”x1” cuts. Due to the nature of our cakes and them being denser than traditional cakes, for dessert we recommend servings of 1.5”x1” cuts. If you are already having desserts as part of your menu, coffee size portions will be sufficient.

To help you determine what size cake you’ll need, please refer to the table below:

  Round Cakes
Cake Sizes: *Coffee *Dessert
6 inch 20 12
8 inch 30 16
10 inch 50 28

Please note: the number of portions given above, is only intended as a guide and based on the following dimensions:

*Coffee Size: 1’’ x 1’’ x 2.5’’

*Dessert Size: 1’’ x 1.5’’ x 2.5’’

Actual quantities may vary, depending on the shape of your cake and the person cutting up your cake.

If you’d like some assistance choosing cake sizes, please contact us...we’d be happy to help you!

How Do You Best Cut Your Cakes?

We recommend using serrated knives, dipping them in warm water and wiping them clean between cuts. Raw cakes are stickier and require this.

To maximize your portions, we recommend cutting tall cakes in square cuts – visualise a grid and cut a 1’’ slice all the way down onto the plate. Push the whole slice onto a plate and then divide it into smaller portions. Continue with the rest of the cake.

How Will My Cake Be Packaged?

All our birthday cakes come in carton pastry boxes on a cake board. Depending on the size and height of the cake, some boxes might have a plastic window and/or no lid.
You can safely transport them on the passenger floor with the air condition on and drive slowly around the corners.

Once your cake is picked up, you are responsible for transporting it safe to your home / event location.

When Can I Pick Up My Cake?

Our standard pick up times are Monday to Fridays between 8.30am and 4.30pm and occasionally, as agreed, on Saturdays between 8.30am and 9.30am. Our cake delivery service is limited to weddings and larger cakes that require assembly on location. This incurs a fee, as agreed/ quoted.

How Should I Store My Cake?

Our raw cakes need to be refrigerated at all times and transferred to room temperature 30 minutes before serving. They will keep up to 5-7 days in the refrigerator, away from strong odours.

Our baked cakes are frosted with buttercream and should be stored in the fridge, until 45 to 60 minutes before serving. These are best served nice and soft, at room temperature. They will keep for up to 5-7 days in the refrigerator, away from odours.
All our cakes are fresh made to order and leftovers can be frozen for up to 2-3 months.

Do You Accept Deposits for Cakes?

Only for weddings and larger events. All our cake bookings need to be confirmed and paid in full to confirm an order. Please know we are unable to make a cake or secure fresh flowers until full payment is received.

Can I Buy Cake Decorations Only From You?

We are sorry, our decorations are created exclusively for our cakes and are not sold separately.

Are Vegan Foods Healthier?

Not all vegan food is healthy or made with whole foods.

Eating mostly wholefood, vegan meals and less processed foods means:

  • More vitamins
  • Minerals
  • More fibre
  • More antioxidants
  • More phytonutrients

So yes! For those without intolerances or allergies to the foods listed above, it is better for us.

Long-standing communities worldwide, with the oldest, healthy living populations, have shown results over a long period.
Eating more plant-based meals does not necessarily mean following an exclusive vegan or vegetarian lifestyle to reap the benefits. It merely means that the more whole food plant-based meals we eat, the greater the quantity and variety of nutrients we ingest so that our bodies have the opportunity to function at their best.

Are Your Products and Recipes Healthy?

Wholefood, vegan diets can be healthy and nutritionally balanced for most people and most ages, supplying almost all essential nutrients.

This can also depend on individual circumstances, lifestyle and other underlying conditions. Our products, recipes and articles should not be used as a substitute for direct medical advice from your GP, nutritionist or dietitian.

Are Your Vegan Products Sustainable?

At Chris’ Kitchen, we are committed to making vegan foods that are healthy and nourishing; however, our physical health is not the only type of health we believe in. We also value the health of our employees and that of our planet. With that in mind, we strive to make choices which minimise our impact on the environment, from sourcing more ethical and sustainable ingredients to minimising our carbon footprint and choosing the right packaging. There are a lot of complexities, regulations and challenges involved when bringing food products to market in a food-safe, sustainable way and with a low footprint.

Sustainability in Our Production

We use only vegan ingredients in our products, and plant crops have a significantly smaller environmental footprint than animal products and components. Plant crops are less polluting to air, water and soils, and they are less dependent on our natural resources such as agricultural land or forest. We believe that choosing to consume vegan products is the single most important thing we can do as individuals to lessen the impact on our planet.

Is Your Packaging Sustainable?

We always try to make the most sustainable decisions with regards to packaging our products. This is a tricky area in the food industry.

Current commercially available materials which are compliant with our storage and temperature requirements and with Australian food regulations are, of course, available. But they are lagging behind our desire for them to be 100% recyclable.

The role of packaging in the food industry is to protect food, keep it safe and ensure shelf-life stability. The entirety of our wholesale supply of ready to eat products is done predominantly in fully recyclable paper-based packaging. Choosing the right retail materials is especially crucial for refrigerated and frozen products as a lot of the compostable or recyclable commercial options are not temperature stable for more than a couple of days. We strive to ensure that our products retain their quality and make it to your homes safely and that we do not add to the issue of food wastage.

Balancing packaging and food waste wrong can harm the environment. We would otherwise have wasted all the ingredients and the production resources they involved, the energy involved in making and delivering our products, as well as the packaging itself.

If food waste was a country, it would be the third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases. We look forward to having better sustainable packaging which meets all criterias.

How Do You Currently Package Your Cakes?

Our wholesale supply of ready to eat cakes is done in entirely recyclable paper-based packaging.

The packaging of our retail supply of ready to eat cakes comprises:

  • Inner sleeve made from 100% recyclable paper.
  • Outer box that is cold temperature suitable made from a thin layer of food safe cardboard and a clear plastic window. The paper component of the box is fully recyclable; the clear window is not currently recyclable so please cut this off before you recycle the boxes.
  • Outer labels made from recycled and recyclable paper, printed with plant-based dyes.

Are You Planning to Become More Sustainable?

Yes, no question about it. We are always on the lookout for better packaging options to prevent food waste and minimise our environmental footprint. We would love to maximise the amount of recyclable packaging in our products, and we are committed to trying different packaging options as they become commercially available.

As you will appreciate, we are a small business. Our capabilities are limited; we cannot create the solutions ourselves, but we would love to be early adopters of any available innovations.

If you work for or with packaging companies or industry experts and can help us achieve better sustainability targets, please get in touch at chris@chriskitchen.com.au.
